Sandtoft Brings Natural Aesthetics to Expansion Project
Sandtoft’s Goxhill handmade clay plain roof tiles have been specified for the expansion of a unique residential property set on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within woodland owned by the National Trust.
Ichthus Architects Ltd selected Sandtoft’s Goxhill plain tiles in dark chestnut for the property located in Toys Hill, an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Weald in South East England.
Bryan Perry, Director of Ichthus Architects, commented: “The site was in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), so we had to choose building materials that would complement this setting.
“The house has been designed to combine traditional and modern materials with large glass windows, a timber frame clad in oak boarding, on a reinforced concrete structural base with Ham stone cladding. We selected the Goxhill roof tile as it enabled us to deliver a striking roofscape that was sympathetic to the natural aesthetics and furthermore matched the existing house.”
Nick Oldridge, Sandtoft’s Sales and Marketing Director, added: “Goxhill clay tiles are handmade, so in contrast to machine made products, each one is slightly different, giving them character and a truly historic feel. Their small format also means they are flexible enough to copy with more complex roof designs”.
Made from natural clay the Goxhill tile has subtle variations that are formed during the manufacturing process. Coloured sand is worked into the tile by hand before it is carefully moulded, dried and then fired in technologically advanced tunnel kilns.
